Everton finished 13th in 1999/00 with relegation never a serious threat. They did however reach the FA Cup quarter-finals, the furthest they had progressed in the competition since they won it in 1995.

Off the pitch, the big story was the battle for control of the club's boardroom, with chairman Peter Johnson finally being forced to sell his shares in the club by the FA with chairman Bill Kenwright taking over.

“A European champion and World Cup-winning captain”

Lothar Matthäus was a complete midfielder, possessing an array of skills that set him apart from his peers. A mere few months prior to reunification, Matthäus captained West Germany at the 1990 World Cup, netting an impressive four goals to spearhead his country to the final. In the climactic showdown in Bari, the German captain outshone yet another of football's all-time greats in Diego Maradona. The Argentine maestro even went on record to hail Matthäus as his toughest adversary, a compliment that was undoubtedly reciprocated by the West German number 10.
