After finishing 17th in 1992/93 just one season after winning the league title, Howard Wilkinson decided to bolster his squad in order to avoid another torrid season. He paid a club record £2.7 million for striker Brian Deane and by Christmas he had paid a further £2 million for midfielder David White. Leeds were now well on the road to recovery, and that recovery process was completed at the end of the season when they finished fifth in the final table.

Leeds United were a solid but unremarkable side for much of the 1994/95 season, but the January signing of Ghanaian striker Tony Yeboah breathed new life into a dull-but-dependable side. Leeds ended up qualifying for the UEFA Cup via the UEFA Respect Fair Play ranking.
