After a positive 1st season back in the Premier League. Blades fans were optimistic that they could match their 9th placed finish from the previous year. It turned out to be the complete opposite as the team suffered a disastrous start to the season, with just 2 points in their first 17 fixtures. This was a record for the worst-ever Premier League start in terms of both points scored and the most consecutive games without a win to start the season at 17.

United remained bottom of the table and were relegated by mid-April,  ending the Blades' two-year status in the top flight.
