2008/09 proved to be one of the most important in the club's history as they were purchased by the Abu Dhabi Investment Group in a deal worth a reported £200 million. With new found riches thanks to Sheikh Mansour, the club started a period of unprecedented spending which included the signing of Robinho for a British record transfer fee of £32.5 million.

On the pitch, success wasn't immediate as the team finished 10th and didn't make a significant progress in any cup competitions giving the new owners plenty to think about and where to splash the cash next.
