Following relegation the previous season, Barnsley almost suffered a 2nd successive relegation as they finished 19th in 2002/03 just 4 points off the relegation zone. Striker Bruce Dyer was the team's top scorer for the 3rd consecutive season with 17 goals in all competitions.
