Milan had 2 poor seasons wearing this design, finishing 6th in 2000/01 and 4th in 2001/02. The shining light was the emergence of Andriy Shevchenko who scored 34 in all competitions in 2000/01. Cesare Maldini's role as caretaker manager provided the highlight of the season with a memorable 6-0 hammering of their cross-city rivals.

Milan started the 2001/02 season poorly and by early November Fatih Terim was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti. In cup competitions, Milan reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and the Coppa Italia. This along with the appointment of Ancelotti, built the foundations for what would be the start of a hugely successful period for the club.
