Velez finished 3rd in the Torneo Apertura before finishing 10th in that seasons Clausura. After winning the 2005 Clausura the team also competed in the 2006 Copa Libertadores, topping their group and qualifying for the knockout stages.

They reached the Quarter Finals before being eliminated on penalties by eventual finalists Sao Paulo.
