Fluminense had a disastrous period in the late 1990's. After being relegated from the Brazilian top flight in 1996, they were saved due to rival teams general managers attempting to influence referee appointments for certain fixtures.

The next year history repeated itself as the club were once again relegated from Serie A but this time it stuck with the club starting one of the darkest times in their history.
