1997/98 saw the Blades finish 6th and qualify for the play-offs but came up short in the playoff semi-finals, losing 3–2 on aggregate. Despite being sold midway through the season, Brian Deane finished as the teams top goalscorer with 11 goals.

1998/99 saw Steve Bruce take over as manager and the team once again challenged for a play-off place but eventually finished 8th. Bruce eventually resigned at the end of the season, citing turmoil in the club's boardroom and a shortage of funds for transfers.
