AC Milan continued their poor form in 1997/98 despite the return of Fabio Capello as manager. The team finished 10th in Serie A meaning another year without European competition for the Rossoneri.

The poor league form could have been forgiven if the team had won that seasons Coppa Italia but they lost the two legged final 3-2 on aggregate. Capello was swiftly sacked by the board at the end of the season ending his second stint as manager under a cloud of disappointment.
