1996 saw River Plate reach the Copa Libertadores final, 10 years after they last lifted the trophy. A Hernán Crespo double in the 2nd leg saw Los Millonarios secure a 2-1 aggregate victory to win the tournament .

The club also secured back to back Apertura league titles in the Argentine Primera División at a time when they had some of the most promising attackers in world football at the time. Solari, Ortega, Aimar, Gallardo, Crespo, Salas and Julipo Cruz were just a few names to wear the famous jersey.
