1999 saw Palmeiras reach their first Copa Libertadores final in over 30 years. Facing off against Colombian club Deportivo Cali, the sides were tied 2–2 on aggregate after the 2 legs. Palmeiras ultimately held their nerve to win 4–3 on penalties and were crowned champions for the first time in their history.
