Following their turbulent 2002/03 season which saw Town relegated, the club started 2003/04 as a non-league team for the 1st time in over 50 years. An immediate return to the higher league was secured at the first attempt, winning the Play-off Final on penalties.

2004/05 saw the club back in the newly re-branded League Two, securing 49 points to finish in 21st place and avoid relegation. Striker Luke Rogers was the teams top scorer with 8 goals in all competitions.
