1999/00 season was a remarkable one for Marseille. Under the leadership of Rolland Courbis, Marseille scored 76 goals in 34 matches, the highest in the league. With an impressive strike force led by Florian Maurice and Robert Pires, Marseille finished in second place in the French Ligue 1, narrowly missing out on the title.

They did, however, secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the following season. Marseille also reached the final of the Coupe de la Ligue but suffered a defeat to Gueugnon.
