2000/01 saw Charlton back in the Premier League after winning the Division One the previous season. Despite being among the favourites to suffer relegation, Alan Curbishley led his side to finish 9th in the table, impressing many on the way.

In 2001/02, despite injuries hitting the squad, the Addicks were still in with a real chance of UEFA Cup qualification as late as March. However, failure to win any of their final 8 league games saw them slide down to 14th in the final table.
