After guiding Benfica to second place in 1997/98, Graeme Souness brought in a handful of British players to the club to help strengthen the squad. A mixed start to the season saw the team in and out of the top 2.

From mid-March, a run of just 1 win in 1 games eventually led to the dismissal of Souness. Long-time assistant Shéu finished the season and secured a 3rd placed finish. Nuno Gomes had its best season of his career, scoring 34 goals in all competitions.
