Following on from their Europa League victory the previous season, Atletico also lifted the UEFA Super Cup after a 2-0 victory in the showpiece event. However, they were unable to defend their title, being eliminated in the group stages with 2 defeats to Aris Thessaloniki being the cause of their downfall.

It would also be the last season for many of the key players to their recent successes with Forlan, Aguero and David De Gea all moving on from the club once the 2010/11 season came to a close.
