Following promotion to Serie A, Atalanta started poorly which cost manager Andrea Mandorlini his job with Delio Rossi replacing him. The new boss did improve results and combined with the breakthroughs of Stephen Makinwa and play-maker Riccardo Montolivo, the team were able to close the gap on their rivals. It unfortunately wasn't enough as the club were relegated after just 1 season in the top flight.
