Bruce Rioch was appointed Arsenal boss at the beginning of the 1995/96 season and was tasked with improving a side that had finished 12th the previous season. Platt and Bergkamp were signed as a signal of intent to play a more attacking, possession based style. Despite eliminations in both the League and FA Cups, Arsenal did manage to finish 5th and secure UEFA Cup qualification.
It proved to be Rioch's only season in charge of Arsenal as he was sacked before the start of the next season. This was due to clashing with the chairman over how transfers were dealt with. His 431 days in charge is the shortest spell of any Arsenal manager since 1899.
