Worn across 2 seasons by West Ham with contrasting fortunes in each of them. Under Glenn Roeder, in his only full season in charge, the Hammers finished 7th in 2001/02.

In 2002/03, despite boasting several young talents including Joe Cole, Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson and Michael Carrick, a disastrous start to the season saw them win just 3 out of their first 24 matches.

Roeder then had to resign due to health issues and he was replaced by club legend Sir Trevor Brooking as caretaker manager. The teams luck began to change and a run of good results saw them go into the final day with a chance of staying up but they needed a 7 goal win to be sure of escaping relegation. A 2–2 draw saw the Hammers relegated to the 2nd tier for the first time since 1992.
