1999/00 saw Bremen finish 9th in the Bundesliga but it was in the cup competitions where the team excelled. A run to the UEFA Cup quarter finals and an appearance in the DFB Pokal final for the 2nd season running saw further progression by the team.

Despite not being able to retain their Pokal title, Thomas Schaaf's men excelled. Forward Marco Bode ended the season as the team's top scorer with 18 goals in all competitions.
