Following their FA Cup final appearance the previous year, Southampton took part in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup for the first time in nearly 20 years. Elimination in the first round followed, courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate defeat.

In 2004/05, the club struggled and Paul Sturrock left after only 6 months in charge in late August, replacement Steve Wigley failed to improve results and he was soon sacked with the club deep in a relegation battle. Harry Redknapp was appointed to try and save the club but the damage had already been done, relegated in 20th place in one of the closest relegation battles the league had ever seen.
