In 1990/91, the club secured automatic promotion back to Division One, securing 3rd place in the league. They also won the League Cup to end the clubs 56-year wait for a major trophy. The match is regarded as one of the most memorable League Cup finals of all time and as of 2023, it is the last time a team from outside the top flight has won any major trophy.
