Perugia signed Hidetoshi Nakata at the start of the 1998/99 season and his signing would prove to the be one that ultimately helped the team retain their Serie A status. 

His 10 goals from midfield helped the club finish one place above the relegation zone and also qualify for the following seasons Intertoto cup. Off the field, the club were exposed to greater commercial opportunities, thanks to their new star signing, with a renewed interest in the club now emanating from the far east.
