Oldham Athletic's luck finally ran out as they were relegated on the final day of the 1993/94 season after 3 years in the top flight. They also reached the FA Cup semi finals forcing the tie to go to a replay before losing 4-1.

1994/95 saw long serving manager Joe Royle quit to take over at Goodison Park in November with Graeme Sharp taking over as player/manager. The new boss managed to steer the team to a 14th placed finish in the league but it was ultimately a disappointing season for the Latics.
