Worn across 2 seasons as the clubs away shirt, 1995/96 saw the team start brightly and were top of the league in early December. However, manager Mick McCarthy left to manage Ireland and under his successor, Jimmy Nicholl, Millwall went into freefall with only 4 more wins all season. A draw on the last day of the season condemned the Lions to relegation on goal difference.

1996/97 season was again a season of half half for Millwall as again they were top of the table in December before just 5 wins from their remaining 26 league games that saw them fall down to finish a disappointing 14th place. The club also experienced extreme financial difficulties that resulted in them being placed in financial administration for a short time.
