Following promotion in 1998/99, Bradford made a return to the top-flight after a 77-year absence. The were in a relegation battle all season, as expected, however they won of their last 4 games including a 1-0 win on the final day to secure their survival.

2000/01 saw the club make their first ever foray into European competition, after qualifying for the Intertoto Cup the previous year. They reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Zenit Saint Petersburg after a 4-0 aggregate defeat. In the Premier League, the Bantams were unable to repeat their survival act of the previous season as they finished 20th and were relegated back to Division 1.
