Ancona finished 18th in 2003/04 winning just twice all season, meaning relegation to Serie B. They were then denied entry to the following season's Serie B after entering administration and later bankruptcy.

A pheonix club, AC Ancona was formed and the club were allowed to participate in Serie C2 in 2004/05.
