Worn as the US took part in the 2014 World Cup where they qualified for the knockout stages for the 2nd consecutive tournament. Defeat in the Round of 16 followed courtesy of an extra time defeat to the Belgians.

Landon Donovan was named in the preliminary squad for the World Cup and joined the team in training camp. However, he was omitted from the final squad by manager Jürgen Klinsmann. Donovan's absence was controversial and Klinsmann later called his decision "one of the toughest decisions in his coaching career".
