Following in their league title win the previous season, Bordeaux played in the 1999/00 Champions League for the first time in the clubs history, reaching the 2nd Group stage and playing some of Europe's top teams on the way.

Domestically the team were unable to defend their title only managing to place 4th in the Ligue 1 table.
